Costs vary with location, facilities, the horse and the care arrangement. This guide does not invent a national “all-in” monthly figure. Request local quotes for your situation.
List recurring commitments
- Board or the cost of maintaining suitable facilities.
- Forage, feed, bedding and storage.
- Routine veterinary and hoof care.
- Lessons, training, transport and appropriate equipment.
- Insurance where appropriate and an emergency reserve.
Do not budget by postponing essential care
Use prevention, planning and sensible purchasing to manage costs. Ask the care team which needs are essential and where an alternative is reasonable. University of Maryland Extension discusses horse care on a budget.
Test the plan
Consider a month with an unexpected bill, a period when you cannot do daily care and the cost of transport. If the budget only works under perfect conditions, revise it before committing.
